The forensic approach involves assessing the health of a portfolio, programme or project by using a set of objective indicators within six standard Critical Success Factors:

• Strategic fit - is it targeted at delivering what we need?
• Planning - does it look possible?
• Requirements - will it deliver what we want?
• Financial status - is the business case still viable and can we afford it?
• Benefits - will benefits be managed, realised, and recognised?
• Risks and issues - are risks and issues managed and under control?

A forensic approach to PPM is of value to anyone with a vested interest in portfolio and programme outcomes:

• provides a regular visual presentation of the current status of a programme or project, coupled with a valuable insight into which aspects require more focus.
• ranks programmes and projects according to an objective measure of their strengths and weaknesses separating out those that should continue, those that need more support and those that could be considered for postponement.
• looks across the whole endeavour and is able to report a programme or project's condition at any time - at go/no go decision-points, key milestones and at regular reporting periods.
